How to Create PayPal Donation Buttons

Besides providing robust payment solutions for merchants, PayPal also provides donation buttons for non-profitable organizations and individuals who wish to receive donations from well-wishers.  With PayPal buttons, you can accept donations on your blog, e-mails, and website.  What makes the buttons exceptional is that they are easy to create and integrate into the donation page/section of a personal or non-profit website.  In the section that follows, I shall take you through the steps of adding PayPal buttons to your website and thereafter highlight the benefits of using PayPal for donation.

How to Set Up Donation Buttons

Step 1- Log into PayPal Account

Assuming that you already have a PayPal account, the first thing that you will have to do is log into your account.

Step 2- Navigate to Merchant Services

Once you log in, click and open the Merchant Services tab and then navigate to the button where you will see a section for Donate Buttons, and under this section, click the link ‘donate”.

Step 3- Select Button Type

Once you are directed to the button page, you will be required to select button type before you can create any buttons. You will have to choose “donations” and then enter the name of your organization and the button ID below it.

Step 4- Customize Check Out  Message and Redirect Option

Next, you will have to customize your button by selecting the button size and the country and language of button. Once you select the button size, a preview of the buttons will be displayed at the right hand-side.

Apart from customizing the buttons, you also have the option to customize the message to be sent to the well-wisher who makes the donation and the page where they will be redirected after making the donation.

Step 5- Copy and Paste Short Codes to your Donation Page

Once you customize the buttons and the particulars of your buttons, you will click on the create button which will generate the button codes. After clicking the buttons, you will be directed to a page with two set of short codes; one is for e-mail link and the other is short code for your website.

To integrate the buttons to your website, you will have to copy and paste the code on the page or area where you want them to appear.

Note: My opinion is that the e-mail option is less intrusive and is the best option for your website.

Test the Buttons

Once you copy and paste the short codes for the donation buttons, I strongly suggest that you test them to see how they are rendered and how they work. To do this, you will have to log out from your PayPal account and then go to the donations page of your website. Click on the donation button and you will be directed to the PayPal home page from where you will be required to log in to complete the donation. This is how the buttons will be rendered in your webage.

Here is a Sample Code you can test on your webpage:

<form action="" method="post" target="_top"> <input type="hidden" name="cmd" value="_s-xclick"> <input type="hidden" name="hosted_button_id" value="9U5JT7DU3M6MQ"> <input type="image" src="" border="0" name="submit" alt="PayPal - The safer, easier way to pay online!"> <img alt="" border="0" src="" width="1" height="1"> </form>
